Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) organized its first Sustainability-Ready Exporters Conference (Su-RE Conference) on 19th November in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The conference, which took place at the MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, served as a knowledge exchange platform for 500 participants from a diverse range of industries such as manufacturing, construction, food products, oil & gas, energy, and services.
The conference was officiated by Minister of International Trade & Industry, Datuk Darell Leiking who was accompanied by MATRADE chairman, Tan Sri Dr Halim Mohammad.
Datuk Darell Leiking, in his opening speech said, "the adoption of sustainability as a focus in our exports will certainly give a strategic advantage to Malaysian exporters as they compete in the global marketplace."
He added that with sustainability as a strategic advantage, Malaysia can better diversify its capabilities in the export industry. Initiatives were being taken to strengthen Malaysian companies' footprint in conventional markets namely Asean, China and United States, as well as emerging markets such as the Middle East, Central Asia, Latin America and Africa.
The panel sessions during the event were framed in Malaysia’s current context and recent policy developments in the country. The first session featured subject matter experts on sustainability practices in business and human rights while the second panel session served as an experience-sharing platform for local business leaders who have adopted and implemented sustainability practices in their respective companies.
The Su-RE conference is a key activity for Matrade’s Corporate Shared Values (CSV) programme known as “Sustainability Action Values for Exporters” (SAVE). The aim is to champion the implementation of sustainable practices by Malaysian companies involved in the export sector.
MATRADE’s mission is to position Malaysia as a competitive trading nation to the world and its functions are:
• To promote, assist and develop Malaysia’s external trade with particular emphasis on the export of manufactured and semi-manufactured products.
• To formulate and implement a national export marketing strategy.
• To undertake commercial intelligence, market research and create a comprehensive database of information for the improvement and development of trade.
• To organize training programs to improve the international marketing skills of the Malaysian exporters.
• To enhance and protect Malaysia’s international trade interests abroad;
• To advise the Government on matters affecting or in any way connected with trade and to act as the agent of the Government or for any person, body or organization on such matters.
The conference will feature industry experts in the field corporate sustainability, international trade, exporters, CSOs, Small and Medium Enterprises, government sector partners and IOM.
Directors/Owners/Decision Makers of Small and Medium Enterprises, start-ups, mid-tier companies and large corporations which are keen to develop a strategic advantage in export by adopting the values of sustainability, government officials, partners and CSOs.

Malarvili works at the Labour Migration Unit of the International Organization for Migration – The UN Migration Agency where she works closely with the private sector on addressing issues of forced labour and exploitation in international supply chains. She is a cross-platform journalist and producer who has worked for multiple publications and media organizations in Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, and Myanmar. During her tenure as a journalist, she has provided in-depth coverage on various international news including US-ASEAN foreign policy, rights of migrant workers, violence against women, humanitarian aid post-Brexit. Malarvili is a recipient of the Melbourne Global Scholar Award. She has a BA (Hons) in Media Studies and International Strategic Studies from University Malaya, Malaysia and a Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Hussam Sultan is an experienced international Islamic banking and finance professional whose interests include product development, commercial banking, international trade, poverty alleviation, Fintech and environmental sustainability. He is currently working as Head, Commercial and Transaction Banking at CIMB Islamic Bank in Malaysia. Before joining CIMB Hussam worked most recently as Head, Commercial Banking at HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad and prior to that he worked for the Dubai based investment firm Fajr Capital on various roles. Hussam has a BEng (Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering from University College London (UCL), UK, and an MSc in Environmental Management for Business from Cranfield University, UK.

Dato’ Ashhadi’s role as Senior Manager,Environmental Sustainability and HSE Assurance for Kerry Group Asia, sees him as the key driver for environmental sustainability for the Group across Asia Pacific , India , China, Middle East and South Africa Region ( APMEA). Reporting to APMEA HSE Regional Director. He is responsible for all environmental performances for all 22 sites and promoting environmental projects to achieve Kerry Global 2020 Targets of minimum 10% over 5 year period reduction on Carbon, Water and Waste generated. Working through the site management on the implementation of all Environmental initiatives as per the Kerry Group Policy with specific KPIs on Carbon, Water and Waste reduction.

Wai Tong is a shareholder and Business Development Director of ERS Energy Sdn Bhd (ERS). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Studies from Cass Business School, London, majoring in Finance. He has been working with Nestle for 5 years in several countries including France, Switzerland and Malaysia in different sustainability related positions. In his current position, part of his role is to coordinate Nestlé’s Tier 1 Suppliers Ethical Audit program throughout zone Asia, Oceania & Africa markets, the other focuses on Responsible Sourcing approaches at farming origins for Spices and Coconut supply chains in Asia.
